Crystal structures
Regular arrangements of atoms are called crystals.
The atomic structure of a crystal affects its properties.
That is why diamonds are hard and graphite is soft, aithough they are both made of carbon.
How do we know about atom arrangements?
One clue is the crystal shape. Another powerful tool was developed in 1912 by William and Lawrence Bragg.
They used X-rays to probe inside a crystal and studied the'diffraction' patterns created when they reflected off the atoms
